Our interior designers’ top five picks for 2021

1. MAX OUT YOUR DECORATING

Because restrictions during the pandemic have greatly deprived people from expressing themselves, there is a big trend this year to go all out on your home design, now that life is opening up more. This involves going big and bold with a range of colours, mixing contrasting patterns across your scheme, and using striking and playful shapes to create a look that constantly stimulates.

One shape that will definitely look great in a modern living room and keep intriguing you and your guests is the Lollipop chandelier from Porta Romana (see image right). It’s perfectly balanced form with lopsided lampshades sets up an eye-catching tension that just can’t be ignored.

2. RELAX IN RUSTIC SOPHISTICATION

At the heart of this look is characterful wood that shows plenty of grain and texture, rather than being perfectly finished. This could involve your home showcasing original features such as exposed beams, wooden floorboards or panelled walls. Or how about introducing rustic birds eye maple veneers to your surfaces? They have a beautiful aged look and small, characterful “eyes” that undulate across the grain.

To complement your wooden accents, look to use a calming palette and simple, elegant accessories. All of which will help to create a light and airy space that’s perfect for you and your guests to relax in.

3. MAKE YOUR HOME AN EARTHLY HAVEN

One of our favourite luxury paint companies is Little Greene, whose range is available to order from all our showrooms. This year, it launched a coordinated collection of paints called Stone, which features 36 natural colours, including rusts, warm greens, deep reds and slubby browns.

Without doubt, these are perfect for creating cocooning, cosy spaces that are pleasing to the eye and soothing for the soul. Sanctuaries many of us need right now after such a difficult time over the past year.

4. GO LUXE WITH A STATEMENT HEADBOARD

Over recent years, there has been a growing trend to bring the look of boutique hotels into the home. One of the most eye-catching ways you can do this in your bedroom is by adding a luxurious headboard that makes a striking focal point.

At Richard Grafton Interiors, this is something we love doing by using upholstered panels in fabrics that complement a client’s scheme and embellishing them with luxurious piping or elegant studwork.

Or why not be even more daring and have a bespoke headboard created for you that features sophisticated mirrored panels? Perfect for adding a touch of opulence and enhancing the light in your bedroom.

5. ADD SOME WOW TO YOUR HOME OFFICE

In the future, it looks like many of us will continue to work from home much more than we did before the pandemic arrived. As a result, there is a continuing focus on the home office and the need to elevate it to new heights to make it a haven of wellbeing and ensure it looks good on all those Zoom calls.

Some of the best ways we think you can do this is by adding textured wallpaper or artwork to your walls, creating a bespoke desk that meets your exact work and storage needs, or ditching your typical black office chair for something much more eye-catching.
